When I met with Kristin & Shawn for their engagement portraits they were really excited and at the same time they were visibly nervous.
Sometimes we are raised with the idea that portraits have to be straight forward, looking at the camera, fake, cheesy smiles. And even though I go over the process with all of my couples, those first 10 minutes sometimes can be intimidating… On the contrary though, Kristin & Shawn got comfortable by spending a relaxing late afternoon at the lake, knowing that they were going to be doing one of their favorite hobbies, spending quality time with each at one of their favorite locations, Smith Mountain Lake.
Here is a little bit about them!
How did you meet?: We met in a class at Virginia Tech. (Go Hokies!) we were in a group for small business management and our other two partners were of NO help. It was just often us two working on it and our relationship grew from there!
How did he propose?: At the gazebo in front of the Duck Pond at Virginia Tech. He explained that we were doing new photos for our 5 year anniversary. The photographer wanted a photo of Shawn walking up behind me and hugging me. First take, they pretended a car was in the way in the background. The second time, I thought he was taking too long to walk up behind me and there he was, down on one knee!
Tell me a funny story about the two of you!: Shawn has seen many movies and tv shows, so much so, he quotes them all the time! On the other hand she hasn’t seen a lot of them so she gets confused every time he quotes them! Causes a lot of confusion and a lot of laughs each time!
When did you know it was him? : “I knew it was him when he worked hard to support me so I could go back to school for my dream job!”
When did you know it was her? : “I knew she was the one when she would wake up early to make me lunch and drive me so I wouldn’t have to ride the bus into Tech”.
On my way back from this session, I just couldn’t wait to upload the images… Kristen & Shawn are both two introverts, but just the fact that they had trusted me so much to have put down their walls and let me in a little parenthesis of their lives, filled my heart with joy!
